Interview

What were your initial thoughts when you found out you were pregnant?
“What am I going to do, how am I going to tell my parents?”
What were the first emotions you felt?
“shocked, scared, & stressful”
Did you have any worries?
“Yes!”
Did you know you were always going to keep the baby?
“Deep down inside yes, but there were thoughts of adoption.”
Was adoption ever an option?
“Yes!”
Did you have the support of your family?
“of course they were VERY supportive! If they didn’t support me, I wouldn’t know what to do…probably move in with the babydaddy.”
<What was your family’s initial reaction to the news?
“disappointed”
Has having a baby affected your relationship with your family and friends, if yes, explain just little.
“yes it had changed, we’ve been all closer together”
What is the situation with the father?
“he’s not supporting my daughter, we’ve been arguing A LOT we’re not together and there is negative tension between me and his family.
Do you think things would be different if you didn’t have a child?
“YES! It would be WAAY different! But I DON’T regret my beautiful daughter!”
Did you feel people looked at you differently when they found out you were pregnant?
“Of course they did! People judge all the time!”
Did you feel different after you found out you were pregnant? Like did you have a different outlook on things?
“Yes, I did”
How old were your parents when they had you?
“Uhm…OLD”
Did you ever think that you would get pregnant so young?
“No I didn’t”
Do you think that all the media like MTV’s teen mom shows have any affect on the rising birthrate in teen moms?
It could be, but that show didn’t effect me in any way of making the decision I made”
Is being a parent what you expected it to be, like easier or harder?
“it is easy to raise my daughter but with all the drama and bs with the babydaddy it wasn’t what I expected.
Do you think that being a parent now is different then being a parent when you are older?
“Yes it is different”
What misconceptions about teen parenting would you like to set straight to society?
“That ALL teen parenting isn’t like how MOST people think it is. As for myself I DON’T mak my parents watch my daughter while I'm out with my friends. Just because I made a mistake doesn’t mean I cant take care of my daughter, people and society need to know that all teen moms/dads aren’t what they think we are.
What advice would you give to a teen mom who just found out they were pregnant?
“They shouldn’t judge us on the mistake I have made but by what we learned from them.”

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
POV states that "A baby born to a teenage mother is at higher risk than a baby born to an older mother for premature birth"(POV).
Although high teen birthrates are important, another important fact s that "teen mothers and their babies face increased risks to their health" during a teen pregnancy (POV).
Some teen mothers have to take supplements to make sure the health of their babies are ensured, while others "may need to change their lifestyle to improve their chances of having a healthy baby" (POV).
All mothers need to take prenatal vitamins to ensure their babies are healthy however "teens are least likely of  all maternal age groups to get early and regular prenatal care" (POV).
Not only is life hard for the teenage parents but also their offspring, "about 64 percent of children born to an unmarried teenage high-school dropout live in poverty"(POV).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
POV shares important facts about teen pregnancy along with health risks for the baby and for their mother. They also talk about the consequences of being a teen parent. At the end of the article they try to make teens put off having children.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
March of Dimes is the foundation that supports this website. It is a charity whose mission is to improve the health of mothers and their babies. They also try to lower the premature birthrate and infant mortality.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
March of Dimes wrote this article to make sure that mothers protect their health and the health of babies. They are trying to make teens put off having a baby until they are ready.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There is a bias, they do not believe that teens understand the severity of being a parent.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
It doesnt change the credibility of the site because you cant change the fact about teen mothers being in poverty.
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I will use this source to support the fact that teens dont understand how hard it is to be a teen parent.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
The article says that "raising children is the greatest responsibility we are given" and it is one of "the hardest things we do in life"(POV).
Teen parenting is harder then being a normal parent because "you are not an adult yourself" however you are still trying to be the adult (POV).
Although people might think differently "Teens moms have to deal with so many problems that older mothers do not have to contend with"(POV).
People begin to believe negative thoughts about a teen mom, not only will "others doubt your parenting" but they also assume that you "slept around"(POV).
Most fathers bail out of the picture and some mothers stay with their families which can be a "good source of support" but also "be a source of frustration" (POV).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
POV wrote an article that is very straight forward and blunt. It talks about the negative thoughts that people will have towards you and the struggles that a teen mother has over a regular adult mother. There is no fluff or extra information in the article it truly is "plain and simple" like the title says.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The site is published and supported by ValJon Enterprises, however when i tried to do further research on the enterprise there was no information so i could not tell if it was credible. Also it is written in POV so you can not judge the credibility.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
The author has nothing to gain, and the enterprise has to clear connection with teen parenting in anyway.
Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
I did not detect any bias.
References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
There were no references made in this article
Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I will use this source because their outlook on how people view teen mothers strikes me as something people need to know.

EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Swierzewski MD, states that teen pregnancy is a major issue and "there are health risks for the baby" and also the "women who become pregnant during their teens"(Swierzewski).
The article says that a decline in teen pregnancies can be  attributed to one of two reasons, either "more effective birth control practice" or also "decreased sexual activity amoung teens"(Swierzewski ).
According to the article, the rate of teen pregnancy could possibly be lowered if "older children" were "educated about sex and sexuality" and also "about the consequences of pregnancy"(Swierzewski).
Teenage parents tend to have harder lives and about"eighty percent of teen mothers rely on welfare at some point"(Swierzewski).
Along with the stress of being a teen parent, most "teenage mothers are more likely to drop out of school" the truth is "only about one-third od teen mothers obtain a high school diploma"(Swierzewski).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Swierzewski,MD, brings together the facts about teen pregnancy and the consequences that go along with being a teen parents. The article does not have just facts but it also brings along statistics to back up the facts. The article also goes into other points about teen parenting and the resources that are available for teen parents. Swierzewski is able to bring all the information you need together in one place.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

Swierzewski  is an MD which makes her credible on account that she has the schooling to understand the severity of the situation. The facts and the statistics are ones that she has found not just numbers that she made up. She seems to be credible and there seems to be no reason to think otherwise.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
Swierzewski does  not seem to gain or lose anything by doing this article, other than maybe making more people informed about teen pregnancy.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
I do not detect any hint of bias in this article, there are only facts and statistics.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
The author doe4s not seem to cite any references throughout the article.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I plan to use this source when i am talking about the consequences of being a teen parent because they are clearly listed here.

The site states that although a teen has a child doesn't mean that they have no options, in fact some teens have "higher rates of success as an adult because of the struggles they faced during their teen years"(POV).
One misconseption with teen parents is that there is no help or couseling for them however," there are options available for teen parenting assistance including parenting classes that teens can take while pregnant or after they have the baby(POV).
The article says teens that "have a strong family background and support, being a teen parent is not as difficult as those teens that don’t have that family support" but you should still "Explore what options you have before  you make any final decisions"(POV).
Although there are many hardships of being a parent "it is possible for successful teen parenting among teens in the United States"(POV).
There are many "Options that exist to help benefit teen parents" there might even be "a free service that teens can use to complete their high school education"(POV).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
POV is a website that is designed for not only pregnant teens but also anyone that needs information about teen pregnancies. There are many ways to get the information about the situation that you need, it is not just about going through with the pregnancy but also the struggles along with it. It also gives you options for after you have the child, such as adoption. This website has been put up for informational purposes. POV does not show bias but talks about the pros and cons of teen parenting.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
POV did a great job on this site of not having a bias, they clearly go in depth about the pros and cons of teen parenting. There is also a disclaimer that states that the "website is for informational purposes only" and that it is used for "non-commercial use and as a guide for parents"(POV). This disclaimer is very straight forward about the intentions of the website.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
There seems to be no attachment whatsoever, it seems to just be u for informational purposes only.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
I do not see a clear bias because they do go into both sides, the good and the difficult parts of being a parent.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
POV references to  Women, Infant, Children (WIC), which just shows that they are in affiliation with other programs but i dont believe it changes their credibility.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I will use this website to show both sides of teen parenting because this website has good statistics and good information that can strength my argument.

The article states that "teen pregnancy is one of the most difficult experiences a young person might ever face" and that it sometimes leads to emotional crisises or "feelings of shame and fear"(POV).
Teens believe that "no one can help" or sometimes teens are too "embarrassed to look for help"(POV).
One important point that they go over is that "denial will not take away the pregnancy" but in fact in can take away from the time that you "could have invested in parental care and counseling"(POV).
The article made sure that teens knew that they had "options, and making a choice may be simple or difficult"(POV).
The article didnt sugarcoat the facts and it even said that "1 in 4 teens is pregnant by the age of 18"(POV).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
POV simply lays out the facts about teen pregnancies and they even go through the choices that you have. They have frequently asked questions which shows that they get asked the same questions over and over by teen parents. There was no biased opinion in this article, it just stated that you had options and that you could choose for yourself. They also said that teen parents should do their research before they make a decision, and that the decisions might be hard to make.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
POV does a good job about not showing a clear bias in this situation. The site is funded by adoption media which shows that they believe that the teen parents should give up their children. It does not however show a negative feel about it, if it was funded by abortion media then that would be different.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
This site is truly informative, they really cant gain anything from promoting this site because they are dealing with human lives. The site is linked up with many positive sources for adoption. They are just trying to make life easier not only on the teen parents but also couples that are struggling to have children themselves.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
Honestly i do not see a bias because they are just getting the word out there about adoption and they arent forcing these teen parents to put their children up there. It might seem harsh due to the fact that they arent sugar coating the facts but i do believe that they are doing their job about informing teen parents of their options.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
The site does quote planned parenthood which gives it more of a feels to put your children up for adoption, however the only reason they quoted planned parenthood was to out up facts.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I am going to use this source to show that teens do not understand the severity of being a teen parents because the FAQs have questions about raising a child on their own or even staying healthy. I think that this sight is here to help the many teen parents that did not know what they got themselves into.
