Proposed Topic in the form of an Essential Question:
Do teenagers understand the severity of having a child at such a young age?
Rationale for Choice
What about this topic appeals to you? Why did you choose it?
This topic appeals to me because of all the media that surrounds this controversial topic, such as the shows teen mom and sixteen and pregnant. I believe that these shows do not do a very good job showing the fact that having a child is such a hard task. They do show the struggles however teens believe that if they get pregnant and get on the show that they can get paid and not have to worry about working. These shows are just a glorified way to show teen pregnancy.
What do you already know about this subject?
I know that there was a spike in teen pregnancy's after the shows were released, and that there are many teen pregnancies not only in the US but everywhere in the world.
What are you hoping to learn about the subject?
I am really hoping to get an insight from teen parents to see if they actually knew how hard it was going to be a parent. Also if they thought that they are too young to be parents, and if they could tell other teens to be more careful and to use more protection that they would get the message across.
What are you most interested in regarding the topic?
I am most interested to see if teens get offended when you tell them that they are too young to be parents and that just because they have kids doesnt meant that they are adults.
What potential risks or challenges do you foresee for your project?
I see a risk in asking teen parents whether or not they think that they were careless and if they think they are too young. I also see a challenge of finding teen parents that are willing to talk to me on this subject.
When you ask questions of a teen parent, you will want to keep them as unbiased as you can. Ask both questions like, "What is the best part of being a teen parent" and "What is the worst part of being a teen parent". Questions like, "Do you wish you had done something different?" should not offend, as long as your tone when you ask is perfectly professional!
